Unlike many popular tourist destinations, Penang has not experienced the same price inflation as places like Bali or Thailand's islands. A comfortable guesthouse room in the heart of the heritage zone still costs just $12-18 per night, and the legendary street food scene means you can eat like royalty for under $10 a day.

George Town: The Heart of Budget Penang

George Town is where you want to base yourself for a Penang visit. The UNESCO World Heritage zone contains most of the attractions, the best food, and the highest concentration of budget accommodation. Everything is walkable, which saves money on transport.

The heritage shophouses that line the streets have been converted into guesthouses, cafes, and boutique hotels. While some cater to the luxury market, plenty remain affordable and offer an authentic experience of living in these historic buildings.
